Can the Seattle Seahawks Repeat Their Super Bowl Triumph?

The Seattle Seahawks bounced back from a disappointing exit in the playoffs in 2012 to claim their first Super Bowl title in the 2013 season. Pete Carroll’s side destroyed the Denver Broncos at MetLife Stadium in a crushing 43-8 victory as they reached the summit of the NFL. However, the big question for the Seahawks is, can they remain there?

The last time a team retained the Vince Lombardi Trophy was the 2004 New England Patriots. Bill Belichick’s side were a team with a young quarterback, a good running game and an excellent defense, meaning that there are striking similarities between the franchises.

Russell Wilson has become one of the best signal callers in the game after just two seasons in the NFL. His prowess for playmaking both with downfield throws and in the running game make him a nightmare of opposition defenses, while his ability to limit turnovers ensures he doesn’t put any undue strain on his team’s defense. The 25-year-old is not blessed with great receivers but can still make all the throws in the game when necessary much like Tom Brady did in his formative years in the NFL.

Add the power of Marshawn Lynch in the running game to the offense and it makes the Seahawks a potent threat, not just throughout the regular season but they play the style of football that is conducive to playing late into the playoffs. Defensively the Seahawks were statistically the best team in the NFL last season. That should continue in the next campaign with players such as Richard Sherman, Michael Bennett and Earl Thomas in the lineup, and ready to dominate again. Usually when teams win the Super Bowl several players immediately leave the club for bigger deals elsewhere in the league. However, the Seahawks haven’t lost too many star players as only Red Bryant, Walter Thurmond, Golden Tate and Chris Clemons chose to leave the club for greener pastures. Seattle have regrouped and will now put their faith in draft picks Jeremy Lane, Jesse Williams and Cassius Marsh to make some impact this season to try to fill that void. Carroll will also want a full season out of Percy Harvin who flashed his ability in the Super Bowl, but only played in two games last season.

Super Bowl hangover?

No team since the 2005 Patriots have won a playoff game the year after they won the Super Bowl. There are some pretty illustrious names in that list that include the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Green Bay Packers and the Indianapolis Colts.

Some of those teams even failed to reach the post-season like the Ravens did in 2013. The Seahawks do face a challenge as they play in arguably the toughest division in football and will face the toughest division in the AFC, when they square off against the West, which includes the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs. So there is plenty to overcome for Carroll and his men, and this will be one of his biggest challenges as head coach. It’s one thing to have success, but it is even harder to maintain it especially as you become the team to beat.
