Colts vs Texans Post Game Notes

The Indianapolis Colts beat the Houston Texans 25-3 in today’s matchup. What some thought to be a close one turned out to be a dismantling. The Colts came out aggressive from the start and played well throughout the game. Here is what I took from watching the game:

– The offense was actually able to make plays early on and scored 20 points in the first half. No that is not a typo.

– Recently, the offense has struggled converting on 3rd downs. The team was 5-15 today.

– The offensive line as a whole played well, allowing only 1 sack all game. The line has improved significantly recently, allowing zero sacks last week against the Cincinnati Bengals.

– Griff Whalen was a stud today at receiver and as a returner. He had 4 catches for 45 yards and a touchdown, a 22 yard KO return, and 67 total yards returning punts. Great day for Griff.

– He struggled in the first half and most of the 3rd quarter, but down the stretch Trent Richardson looked alright, connecting for a 21 yard run in the 4th quarter. He also had a solid day receiving, having 4 catches and a TD. He had a season high 64 rushing yards today.

– Pep Hamilton finally found a way to utilize TY Hilton. The offense had a lot of designed screens for Hilton, and he had a solid day with 8 catches on 12 targets.

– The defense had another solid performance, holding the Texans to just 239 total yards.

– First round draft pick Bjoern Werner had his best game as a pro. He applied pressure all game long, and had a big sack late in the game.

– Darius Butler was your player of the game. He had 2 INT today and another one that he dropped. He also had 3 deflections.

– Vontae Davis also had a great game. He had a deflection and forced Andre Johnson to drop a couple passes. He held Johnson to just 18 yards. In there last matchup, Andre Johnson blew him up the whole game.

– Robert Mathis broke Dwight Freeney’s sack record today. He recorded his 16.5 sack of the year, a league high.

– The pass rush as a whole was very good today. Recording 4 sacks, 8 knockdowns, and 13 hurries.

– Newly signed running back Tashard Choice had a solid debut for the Colts. He had a 28 yard KO return and 18 rushing yards in the 4th quarter.

– Pep Hamilton had a good game of play calling. I say this because he has been on the hot seat as of late due to his bone-head play calling. He had an aggressive play style today and it worked today.

– The run game was a lot better today. The team had 152 rushing years for an average of 4.2 YPC.
