Hokies Game Preview: Thursday Night Football

Virginia Tech (2-1) vs. Georgia Tech (3-0)

The Virginia Tech Hokies begin ACC play with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Thursday night. This will be the Yellow Jackets third ACC game, the first two were both wins versus Duke and North Carolina.

Georgia Tech:

The Yellow Jackets are led by sophomore QB Vad Lee, who has ran their patented triple option offense very well so far. Lee has 180 yards running for the season, but Georgia Tech has thrown the ball more than usual, which has led to Lee’s 418 yards and seven touchdowns through the air. The Yellow Jackets also have some talent on defense, but their biggest asset is controlling the clock and making sure their defense doesn’t have to be on the field.

Virginia Tech:

The Hokies are coming off of their sloppy and dramatic triple OT win versus Marshall and look to their defense to help them to their first win in ACC play this year. The Hokies have struggled against the triple option in the past due to the fact that the offense burns blitzing defenses. Bud Foster loves to blitz, but it is hard to blitz and be accountable for the fullback, running back, and quarter back. Virginia Tech’s defense has been strong this year and was able to stop the running game of #1 Alabama, but Georgia Tech brings a totally different approach to the run game.

During points of the game Virginia Tech will give up long drives and it will be up to the offense to respond. That’s not a promising picture for the Hokies, as Logan Thomas has led an inept offense so far.

Final Score Prediction: Georgia Tech: 27 – Virginia Tech: 20
