Patriots' clever maneuvering may prevent Giants from signing LeGarrette Blount

The New England Patriots dug deep into their bag of tricks this week and may have come back with a hand that prevents the New York Giants from signing veteran running back LeGarrette Blount. As of Wednesday, any unrestricted free agent who signs with a new team is no longer counted toward the formula for compensatory draft picks. However, the Patriots found a loophole by way of a rarely-used tender option. The team extended a tendered offer of $1.1 million to Blount, which allows him to negotiate contracts with other clubs up until July 22. If any team signs him to an offer sheet during that time, the Patriots could match said offer or would receive a compensatory pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
