Vikings 2015 season preview by Joel Schafer

Preseason game number three against the Raiders  was mercifully put into the books.  The weather was bad, halftime was way too short (2 minutes). Yellow flags seemed to rain out of the sky.  Did I mention there was a weather delay of nearly an hour?  There was plenty of good to take from this and several concerns.

Mike Wallace must not understand the memo to all vikings receivers, that Teddy is good at getting the ball out on time. Wallace struggled to get open and when he finally got a ball thrown his way he dropped it.  He wasn’t the only one to drop a pass of Bridgewater’s  there were 3 drops in Teddy’s 4 incomplete passes. Of the three drops only one was a mediocre pass.

Stefon Diggs continues to show great vision as a punt returner.  In his one return attempt he looked real good reversing direction and flipping the field position in a 29 yard effort. Diggs has yet to find much success in the offense against the second and third string guys.

Corrdarrelle Patterson  was in for one Kick return that was kicked into the end zone and one that went out-of-bounds.   He also ran a wrong route on offense it resulted in a Shaun Hill interception. He has looked bad in games all preseason minus the go route he ran the week before burning a third stringer for a touchdown on a go route. Patterson looks lost on the field, there seems to be no threat of him taking a kick to the house as he did in his rookie campaign.

Marcus Sherels  will make the team as a valuable asset on special teams. Sherels is the best gunner on the punt coverage team and it is not even close.  Sherels is the first guy to the ball on seemingly every punt.  Sherels is a punt returner and kick returner who has very good vision on the returns and that vision makes him dangerous in the return game. His  49 yard return  (the only kick off returned by a Viking in this game) was very close to going the distance.

T.J. Clemmings is a rookie and will be starting for Phil Loadholt. There is no other plan. Evan Mathis signed with the Broncos to win a Superbowl, leaving more money from other teams on the table. T.J. looked fine in the time he played. He didn’t make any big mistakes.  He needs to get some of the nastiness back that he had in college. Hopefully he is saving that for the season.

Blair Walsh missed 3 field goals and an extra point attempt in poor conditions. He is in some sort of funk that gets most kickers their walking papers, yet there is no camp leg in for either punter or kicker. Cullin Loeffler was released from the Vikings  after 10 years of being the long snapper.  Was this to give consistency to the snaps in the kicking game?tjstefon-diggstraeteddy   Jeff Locke has looked very good in the punting game dropping all 3 punts inside the 20 against the Raiders.

Captain Munnerlyn was playing with the third string.  He has played in only 21 snaps on the defense .  My understanding is he is the with the ones in practice. What message is being sent by having him in at garbage time?  Is Trae Waynes getting the game time to gain experience?  Will Captain my Captain be with the club when week one rolls around?
