The San Francisco 49ers and Free Agency

49ers Defense 2

Barring any setbacks, per reports, wide receiver Torrey Smith will sign with the San Francisco 49ers later today. Smith is what the 49ers’ passing attack desperately needs – speed. However, do not expect Smith to become a stat machine in San Francisco’s offense.

The 49ers have made it loud and clear that they are a run first team. Smith is well aware of that and still would like to play for the franchise that has won five Super Bowls. The signing will reunite Smith with wide receiver Anquan Boldin.

The two played together with the Baltimore Ravens, who defeated the 49ers in the Super Bowl. Rumors are also swirling that wide out Stevie Johnson will be released. That most likely means that San Francisco will use one of their picks to draft a young rookie receiver.

With the kind of off-season that the 49ers have had, the front office needs to bounce back big. A lot of the fans are getting anxious and are losing faith. General Manager Trent Baalke and new head coach Jim Tomsula have their work cut out for them.

Smith may not be enough to save face. Perhaps the front office should be looking at players such as running back Adrian Peterson and/or cornerback Darrelle Revis. Especially, since middle linebacker Patrick Willis has announced his retirement. A big splash in free agency just may reignite the fan base.

It appears the 49ers are the one team stagnant and all the other 31 teams are getting better.
