Miami Dolphins Sign Louis Delmas

With less than twenty four hours till the start of NFL free agency the Miami Dolphins agree to terms with safety Louis Delmas. After being cut by the Detroit Lions, Delmas flew down for a visit with the Dolphins and a deal was in the works. After being a possible player for Jarius Byrd, that was all a smokescreen. Delmas will replace Chris Clemons at the safety spot. Interesting enough, Clemons signed a one year deal last year and the Dolphins let him go to free agency only to sign Delmas to a year deal as well. He will play next to Reshad Jones at the safety spot.

As a player Delmas is a much better playmaker on the ball, he is smoother overall. Delmas is athletic and will be an overall upgrade over Chris Clemons, he is a higher impact defender. Last year Clemons was serviceable which would be why the team signed him on a one year deal but Delmas has elite ability.

The second round draft pick by Detroit and hometown kid has shown some promise. In 2010 and 2011 he was a pro bowl alternate.Last year with the Lions, Delmas totaled 64 tackles, 3 interceptions and 2 sacks. His main problem has been his health, which is a big reason why he is on a one year deal. Very similar to Brent Grimes last year who also was on a one year deal. When starting a full season, Delmas produced, in his rookie year he totaled 94 tackles, 2 interceptions and 8 pass deflections.

Today the Dolphins released veteran corner back Dimitri Patterson and will have saved the team $5 million dollars. The Dolphins still have $40 million left to spend.

A deal with Brandon Albert could be done by the start of free agency at 4 PM tomorrow.  The Dolphins have plenty of holes to fill on the offensive lines and throughout the roster. Look for the Dolphins to be aggressive again this year, at the same time we still do not know what kind of general manager Dennis Hickey is. So we could be in for a couple of surprises.
