As the Colts get ready to face the New England Patriots on Saturday, the Colts were dealt with two injuries especially in one position which they are somewhat short-handed. The Colts place CB Greg Toler on the IR who has missed almost half of the season with a groin injury. According to Chuck Pagano, Greg Toler aggravated the same groin injury and it showed during the Chiefs game as he was burned on a long TD catch via Kevin Bowen of Colts.com. The Colts also placed DE Fili Moala on the IR with a knee injury as well.
To fill up the two open roster spots the Colts decided to sign former Patriots WR Deion Branch and elevated practice squad member rookie WR Josh Lenz to the 53-man roster via Mike Chappell from Indystar.com.
Branch, a second-round pick in the 2002 NFL draft, played with two teams in his career before signing with the Colts (Seahawks and Patriots). He has caught 518 passes for over 6,600 receiving yards in his career and was the MVP in Super Bowl XXXIX. Branch hasn’t played this season but apparently is still in NFL shape.
Let’s see if the defense can perform better after losing one of their starting corners and losing a depth in their defensive line. I expect Branch to primarily be used as a punt returner or kick returner unless injuries force him to play. Lenz will probably be used as depth purposes only including playing special teams.
