Tampa Bay Buccaneers Fire Greg Schiano

I have to say this comes as a bit of a surprise. Following a somewhat strong finish to the 2013 season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have fired head coach Greg Schiano and general manager Mark Dominik, per Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.

Schiano has been an enigmatic figure in Tampa this season. Largely criticized due to his handling of the Josh Freeman situation, it appeared that he had lost his locker room. Tampa Bay started the season with seven consecutive losses, at which point it appeared Schiano was gone. It responded by winning four of its last nine games and remained competitive throughout the second half of the season.

Apparently, this wasn’t enough to save Schiano’s job. It had been reported last week that the former Rutgers coach was interested in the Penn State job should it become available. Maybe this should have been seen as a sign.

Dominik was with the organization for nearly two decades prior to his firing and served as its GM from 2009. The Buccaneers were 24-40 in his four seasons in that capacity.
