Colts Week 13: Game Report Card vs. Titans

Final Score: Titans 14 – Colts 22

A close victory has given the Colts virtually a lock on the AFC South division title as the Colts swept the Tennessee Titans this season. The Colts have a three game lead and with four games left, the Colts practically have the division title on their hands. The only way the Colts can lose the division title is if the Titans win their next and final four games (one of the game is against the Broncos) and the Colts lose their next and final four games. Seems unrealistic but we are talking about the NFL which anything can happen.

Going back to Sunday’s game, the Colts played ugly (mostly the offense) and with the help of four Titans offensive turnovers and the five field goals of kicker Adam Vinatieri the Colts win a close game against division rival Tennessee Titans.

Offense: The Colts offense was pretty good for the most part but it seemed as they got to Titans territory, they stumbled. However, one bright spot was the crucial fourth quarter drive that started at their own eight yard line which they scored with a Donald Brown four-yard touchdown. This is the type of drive that the Colts wanted to see as they took out six minutes off the clock late in the 4th quarter. Darrius Heyward-Bey is continue to show that signing him was a bad move. Other than Bey’s one catch for 23 yards, he is still having trouble with dropping the ball. Pagano must bench him for other young receivers like Da’Rick Rogers who needs more snaps during games. Also the offensive line was horrible as the Titans defense was able to sack Andrew Luck five times during the game (four sacks in the second quarter alone).

Grade: C-

Defense: A great showing by the Colts defense after letting opposing offenses score easily. The Colts pass rush is still a liability as the Colts on pass rush threat is the league sack leader Robert Mathis who got another strip-sack fumble late in the third quarter. Mathis total is now 15.5 sacks and needs one more sack to break the Colts record for the most sacks in a season. The Colts secondary finally got an interception (well make that three) as CB Cassius Vaughn picked off Titans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick twice. Freeman had a good game by getting the game-ending interception and recovering the strip-sack fumble. A good showing from the Colts defense.

Grade: B

Special Teams: A great game for the future HOF kicker Adam Vinatieri as he was 5-for-5 in field goals where four of the five field goals were 40+ yards. Also Vinatieri got his 16th season of 100+ points which he tied Jason Elam’s NFL record of 16 season of 100+ points.  Pat McAfee was pretty good overall by punting an average distance of 45.5 yards per punt and a 60 yard punt. Overall a great day for the special teams.
