Colts waive WR Griff Whalen and promote TE Justice Cunningham

The Indianapolis Colts decided that their wide receiver situation is good enough without Griff Whalen as the Colts waived wide receiver Griff Whalen.

Whalen was suppose to be the answer on third downs after Reggie Wayne got his season-ending injury during the Broncos vs. Colts game. However since the season ending injury, Whalen has only caught seven passes (17 targets) for 74 yards. Not the production that the Colts were expecting especially since Whalen is familiar to the Pep Hamilton system.

As the Colts waived Griff Whalen, they also promoted TE Justice Cunningham to the active roster. Cunningham was the last pick of the 2013 NFL Draft and has not caught a ball for the Colts in the regular season due to him being cut in the final roster cuts during the preseason. He has not been flashy, statistically, in the preseason as well. This move is probably just to add another blocker in run plays.

These two moves currently place five wide-receivers and four tight-ends in the active roster. Da’Rick Rogers now has a good shot to be active on Sunday’s game against the Cardinals. Rogers was promoted last week but was inactive on the Thursday Night Football game against the Titans. Watch for Rogers to be part of the Colts offense if they fall behind early in the game.
