Colts Notes: Wayne Expanded Role Against The Texans

Usually when an NFL player gets a season-ending injury, usually that would be the last time you would see him. However for Wayne, he wanted to still help the offense as much as possible. That’s where the Colts coaching staff had an idea.

Reggie Wayne tore his ACL against the Broncos on a close win at home. It seemed that Wayne’s season was over with the Colts but he still wanted to help as much as he can. Therefore, with the help of Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, Reggie Wayne got the title and role of assistant wide receivers coach. His role probably saved the game as Wayne had the duty of checking the slot coverage to see if the Colts can take advantage. And the Colts took advantage indeed.

T.Y. Hilton started the game poorly as he dropped a key third-down pass. However, when the second half started, Hilton started to take advantage in the slot by catching two touchdown passes. You may credit the Texans poor slot coverage but Wayne probably informed Hamilton and Luck about the advantage that Hilton can have in the slot. Therefore half of Hilton snaps resulted in the slot position where he caught almost half of his 7 passes.

“In between series, I would pass over the pictures and ask his opinion,” Hamilton said via Mike Wells from “And, of course, during the series he had a job. His job was to watch their slot coverage and give myself and [quarterback] Andrew [Luck] feedback.”

Looks like Wayne will stick being an assistant WR coach until next season where he will line up opposite and maybe next to T.Y. Hilton.

Friday’s Injury Report: After RB Trent Richardson and OG Hugh Thornton missed practice on Thursday, both of them practice on Friday. Richardson is dealing with an ankle injury while Thornton a calf injury. OLB Robert Mathis, LB Cam Johnson and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey both practiced on Thursday and seem that they are in track to play on Sunday against the Rams. CB Greg Toler, S Delano Howell and CB Josh Gordy have not practiced all week and received those injuries since the Broncos game.
