Josh Freeman to the Minnesota Vikings, Christian Ponder’s Future Now in Question

josh-freeman-oversleepsAccording to various reports Sunday night, free-agent quarterback Josh Freeman has agreed to a deal with the Minnesota Vikings in a move that effectively ends Christian Ponder’s tenure with the team after less than three seasons.

Conventional wisdom seems to suggest that Freeman will compete with Matt Cassel for the starting gig, meaning that Ponder’s roster spot isn’t necessarily safe.

After a contentious first four weeks with head coach Greg Schiano in Tampa Bay, Freeman was granted his release last week. The veteran quarterback is set to become a free agent following the 2013 season and will likely be looking at upping his value with a Vikings team that is in desperation mode after a 1-3 start.

Assuming Freeman does end up under center at some point this season, he’s likely playing for a role on a talented Vikings offense beyond 2013. One of his primary motivations for signing with Minnesota was the fact that he’d be given an opportunity to start. Two other teams, the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers, who expressed interest in Freeman, wouldn’t have given him that opportunity.

As it relates to Ponder, we are currently in the beginning stages of what promises to be another interesting situation. It’s not sustainable to have him as the No. 3 quarterback behind Cassel and Ponder. This seems to indicate that the former first-round pick will either be traded or released in the coming days.
