49ers, Others Want Aldon Smith to Enter Rehab

ALDAccording to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, people within the San Francisco 49ers organization are pushing for the young linebacker to enter a rehabilitation program after his latest DUI arrest. As you already know, Smith crashed his SUV into a tree in Santa Clara Country, California during the early hours of Friday morning. The third-year linebacker blew a .16 BAC (blood alcohol concentration) which is two times the legal limit in the state of California.

Talking on Fox’s pregame show this morning, Glazer had the following to say…

Those close to Aldon Smith they’re talking to him about him entering a rehab facility as early as this week…

If he goes into rehab and if he accepts this, it means he could miss some significant time. Right now they’re (49ers organization) saying we’re not dealing with Aldon Smith the player, we’re dealing with Aldon Smith the person and the person needs some help.

This would pretty much be an unprecedented move by a player during the season. If Smith enter rehab, he’s likely going to miss a significant chunk of the season, especially if said rehab program is in patient, meaning that he is a resident of the facility. Smith could choose to do out patient, but that is highly unlikely in situations like this.

On the field, this would hurt the 49ers a great deal. Smith has the NFL record for the most sacks in the first two seasons of his career and has been a major headache for opposing quarterback in his first two-plus seasons. But as the report indicates, San Francisco isn’t worries about Smith as a player. If these reports are true, San Francisco’s unprecedented move could set an example around the National Football League.

More on this situation to come.
