Injury Update: Dwayne Allen Done For Season; Colts Offense Tested

Not only do the Colts lose a great blocker, but a tight end that had a pretty good rookie season offensively, which showed that he was going to be a feature piece in the “no-coast” offense.

Now the Colts will look to expand the role of 2012 second-round draft pick, Coby Fleener, who caught four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown in Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins. Fleener does have the potential to fill the role left by Allen, however, Fleener does not have the same type of force when it comes to blocking.

Taking over the blocking reigns will be Dominique Jones. He excels in pass blocking but is pretty average when it comes to catching the ball. In his two-year career, Jones has caught two passes for 21 yards, so it shows his inexperience playing in the NFL. If anything, Pep Hamilton needs to change the offense where they use more three-WR sets rather than two-TE sets.

The remaining Colts tight ends are Jack Doyle and 2013 Mr. Irrelevant Justice Cunningham. Actually, there are no tight ends on the active roster that have the more experience than Fleener and second-year tight end Dominique Jones, therefore this position will be tested throughout the season.

Also, Ryan Grigson can still trade for a tight end before the trade deadline if he so chooses. However, it’s doubtful that the Colts will do that.

This might be a long year if the Colts don’t adjust to this huge loss of Dwayne Allen.
