Washington Redskins: Writing Checks and Paying Bills

skinsThe Washington Redskins took on the Buffalo Bills at FedEx Field and this game is critical for the team and guys who are on the bubble. The Redskins starters only played for about twenty plays, and the tutor Rex Grossman drew the start at quarterback.  The Redskins also sat running back Evan Royster, safety Brandon Meriweather , cornerback Ryan Mouton,  safety Phillip Thomas, linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough, linebacker Roddrick Muckelroy, offensive tackle Jacolby Ashworth and nose tackle Barry Cofield.

The Redskins defense started the game off and they came out picking up right where they left off on Monday night. This Redskins defense is swarming to the ball attacking the ball carrier. It’s very clear that it will not be easy to run the ball on this Redskins defense.  The defensive line is getting pressure and really controlling the line of scrimmage for the most part.  Jim Haslett has a good combination of guys to rotate in and out.  With that being said there are a few things we have to get fixed.

Penalties can and will hurt you especially against the quality football teams.  David Amerson had the face mask penalty and last week he had a few as well. The defense as a whole has to clean up this portion of their game. Dumb penalties give teams second chances and can cause you to beat yourself. Let’s not be overly alarmed though, I see this being cleaned up by Week 1.

Tackling in the secondary

This has been a noticeable problem and it is mainly the rookies that are making these mistakes. David Amerson has to learn to take better angles to get the runner down and to avoid ending up on the Sport center highlight reel. With that being said, Amerson did make some good plays today as well. Bacarri Rambo has had the same problem in the first two preseason games but turned the corner today making some key open field tackles. I don’t see this being an ongoing problem these guys will contribute to the defense and continue to get better as the season progresses.

Offensively the Redskins looked crisp. Grossman was dropping dimes out there hitting eight different receivers in the first quarter. Aldrick Robinson looked great out there along with Santana Moss and Jordan Reed getting involved. Roy Helu looks healthy and strong out there — this is going to be a  bright spot for the Redskins this year. Roy Helu had 13 carries for 70 yards and Pat White continued to show case his talent going seven of 14 for 96 yards. White really looked calm cool and collected. It’s unfortunate for him that he will not be able to make this team.

Grossman, however,  has played out of his mind and Chris Thompson was able to come in and get some work as well. Thompson had 15 carries 44 yards and he got a little work in the return game.

As I stated before I’m happy that I do not have to make these cuts. This Redskins football team has a ton of talent and depth. This team will be deep in a lot of key position and that is very important for them if they want to repeat as NFC east champs and go for the bigger goal the Super Bowl.  Looking at the Washington Redskins it is clear that they are ready for Week 1.
