San Diego Chargers: WR Malcom Floyd Goes Down With Knee Injury

FBN: DEC 20 Bengals at ChargersJust when it seemed like the San Diego Chargers couldn’t take another injury to their wide receiving group, this happens.  During practice on Monday, Malcom Floyd collided with cornerback Back Shareece Wright and went down. Tom Krasovic of UT San Diego reported that head coach Mike McCoy was nearby and immediately yelled for the trainer.

If this injury proves to be of the season ending variety it could be a major blow to the entire offense for the 2013 season.  Floyd, who has a bit of a history with injuries over his career in San Diego, had just signed a three year extension last season.  He was expected to be the veteran leader and outside presence of this young wide receiver group.  Over the last five years he has averaged nearly 17.5 yards per reception.

This, along with the injury to Danario Alexander, leaves the bolts with Vincent Brown (coming back from missing 2012 with a broken ankle), Eddie Royal (has been hurt multiple times over his career), Keenan Allen (third round selection, missed end of season in 2012 at Cal with leg injury) and Robert Meachem.  Beyond them are unproven young players like Mike Willie, Dan DePalma, Deon Butler and Luke Tasker.  Don’t be surprised if San Diego takes a look at Brandon Lloyd who played under head coach Mike McCoy when he was the offensive coordinator at Denver.
