Wide receivers Arrelious Benn (Philadelphia Eagles) and Danario Alexander (San Diego Chargers) both suffered torn ACL’s in practice today and will miss the entire 2013 season, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Benn, who was acquired from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a trade prior to the 2013 NFL draft, was going to be relied on to step up with teammate Jeremy Maclin down with a torn ACL.

Benn was selected in the second round of the 2010 draft and had a strong impact in each of his first two seasons with Tampa Bay; going for over 800 combined yards. He fell out of favor this past season and recorded just four receptions in eight games.

Meanwhile, Alexander caught on with the Chargers during the midway point of the 2012 season and surprised the football world in 10 games with the team. He recorded 658 receiving yards and seven scores during that span. San Diego brought him back as a restricted free agent and he was pegged to start opposite Malcom Floyd. For Alexander, it’s yet another torn ACL in a career that seems to be filled with them. The Missouri product has played in just 28 of a possible 48 games during the past three seasons.

His injury could mean that Vincent Brown and Keenan Allen will battle for the starting gig in San Diego during the preseason. Both are extremely talented, but have injury concerns themselves.

San Diego is in a better position to absorb this type of training camp injury. It also has veterans Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal looking to make impacts prior to the start of the regular year.

Philadelphia’s wide receiver situation is a bit more worrisome.

With the Riley Cooper situation in the headlines and Maclin out for the season, Chip Kelly and Co. will have to look at a bunch of youngsters to step up and make an impact this season. Damaris Johnson, Ifeanyi Momah, among others will look to impress during the preseason.
