Missing Piece for the 49ers

49ers Defense 2

The San Francisco 49ers signed cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to a one year contract.  Their secondary now consists of Carlos Rogers, Tarrell Brown, Chris Culliver, Donte Whitner and Nnamdi Asomugha (not to forget Tramaine Brock and Perrish Cox).  In all honesty, most teams wanted to air out the ball against this defense, since they thought that would be the best way to beat them.  Just ask Aaron Rogers, Drew Brees and Matt Ryan.  Not only did these quarterbacks air it out and throw for numerous yards (and TDs), they all had  another thing in common – a loss.  What will the offensive coordinators game plan be versus this stout 49ers defense now?  Will it be run heavy or pass heavy? Or will it be a mix of both?  Whatever it is, the game plan itself will have to be flawless.  The 49ers proved last year (and the year before) that they can beat teams that try to air it out against them.  The strength of this defense is in its front seven, which includes, all pros like Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman in the middle, the Smith brothers on the edges — all who can wreak havoc with a heavy pass rush (Aldon and Justin).  With Asomugha now joining the team, this will allow defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to get a bit more creative with his schemes and disguises.  There is however, one big missing piece to this defense – a safety.  With Dashon Goldson signing with Tampa Bay, the 49ers will look at a young safety to sign in the NFL Draft.  However, something tells me that the 49ers aren’t done yet with Free Agency. There is one person on the market who is on San Francisco’s radar.  A person who can come in and be a contributor, leader and a great player.  This person may need to be convinced to take a heavy discount in order to win a Super Bowl.  If this person signs with San Francisco – then the 49ers would have arguably the best defense on paper going into the 2013 season.  How about a reunion with Nnamdi?  Are you listening Charles Woodson?
