Damario Jeffery Rookie Blog Update

Damario Jeffery 3

NFL Draft Series by PFC Blogger Chris Brown (@cbreezy2411)

As part of the rookie’s blogs here at ProFootballCentral we continue to talk with potential NFL hopefuls. Today we had a chance to catch up with South Carolina Linebacker Damario Jeffery.

CB: It has been a few weeks since we last talked Damario, how have you been doing and how have the workouts been?

DJ: Hey Chris, well the workouts have been a lot harder and getting more difficult by the day.  We have been doing a lot more conditioning than usual.  Also to go along with the conditioning we have been focusing on my technique during drills.  They say that is the first thing that goes when you begin to get tired and fatigued, so we’ve been trying to build up my conditioning and stamina.  We have been working on putting those two things together and making sure that I am able to withstand fatigue while playing.

CB: Is there anything new you’ve put into your workouts or something in particular that your being to focus on?

DJ: Well right now we are doing a lot of repetition and trying to build up muscle memory.  By building up muscle memory it allows me to not get tired as easy and it also allows me to move more freely being that my body is already used to the movements.  Being able to master this under pressure will help me at the next level.  One thing that I’ve been and want to focus on leading up to my pro day is the 225 bench press.  I want to be able to showcase my strength in that realm.  It shows and demonstrates upper body strength and that is something you need as a linebacker when trying to make tackles.

CB: You had mentioned your pro day, that is on March 27th right? How do you plan on standing out during that day?

DJ: I’m actually very excited because I get to showcase myself to multiple NFL scouts.  There will mostly be my classmates that will be participating during that day.  It is kind of nice to have them there because we are all trying to reach the same level.  Having them there will be good because we are all like a family and have been since we committed to play at South Carolina.  We will be pushing each other in every event which will only help get the best out of everyone there.  As far as how I plan on standing out, I plan on showcasing my ability to play in space.  Since the NFL is a passing league this will be a big benefit for me.  I believe that I have great range in the linebacker position; I believe I can cover lots of ground in a short amount of time.  I want to be able to display that I can be a three down linebacker at the next level. We like to call that down “the money down” out on the field and I want to showcase that I can be there for that.

CB: With your pro day approaching in a few weeks, what do you plan on doing until then?  With all the spare time do you every find yourself going back and doing some film study?

DJ: Well I will be continuing to work out and preparing myself for my pro day.  The next few weeks will be very intense workout wise.  I have to be at the top of my game in my preparation, I want to make sure that I am in the best shape possible.  After those few weeks I will take the week before to calm down a little and begin to get my mind right and focused.  I look back on film and not so much to see what I could have done different but, I try to look back and make sure I’m up to date on my knowledge on specific schemes just in case I get asked those questions during an interview.  I want to display that I can answer specific questions, and be able to name what defensive schemes we are playing.  This will allow me to display my football knowledge to the scouts.

CB: I know being a football player that is preparing for the next level you had to have tuned in to the NFL Combine to see what numbers other linebackers were putting up.  Do you feel after seeing those numbers that you can compete or even surpass them?

DJ: I have the respect for all of those guys who got the invite and had a chance to showcase their skills.  I don’t want to take anything away from that at all because they earned it.  Based on the numbers that came out of the combine, I feel I will be able to compete really well.  I believe I will even surpass some of those numbers because I know have the athletic ability to do so.

CB: Spring practice just started for the team on Monday, how does it feel to be on the other side of the fence so to speak?

DJ: It’s different to be on the side, but I’ll miss the guys.  I do know that I’m doing to get a new chance to further my life though.  Knowing that I played my last play in college football is weird but I know that I have an opportunity to continue my dream and compete at the next level.  But it does feel awkward not to be out on the field with them now.

CB: Alright well it was great catching up with you today, we would like to wish you the best in the next few weeks leading up to your pro day and look forward to hearing how it went afterwards.

DJ:  Thank you Chris, and I will be sure to keep you updated on how things go, until then I’ll be working hard everyday.
