49ers Wheeling And Dealing

By PFC 49ers Blogger Shakeel Khan

Trading shades of red and gold repeats history. Joe Montana, Steve Bono, Elvis Grbac and now Alex Smith. The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers agree in principle to trade quarterback Alex Smith for a second round draft pick along with another compensatory pick.  This trade is beneficial for both clubs in their own unique ways.

The San Francisco 49ers will relieve $8.5 million dollars in cap space and now are in position to start a new chapter with their franchise quarterback Colin Kaepernick. This positions the 49ers in strategically packaging a trade for Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, considering their numerous draft picks come April.  The San Francisco 49ers’ defense has minor holes to fill and the cornerback position is one that needs attending to. Vic Fangio’s defense can benefit with a versatile player like Revis given that quarterbacks hesitate to throw his way.  This will allow Fangio to develop defensive schemes that will wreak havoc for opposing offenses.
Instantaneously, the Kansas City Chiefs will improve their quarterback position with Alex Smith. Smith was rated the number one QB in the National Football League before getting concussed. Turnovers have been Kansas City’s downfall and it is no secret that QB Matt Cassel is to blame.  WR Dwayne Bowe (the $55 million contract probably seems more appealing now) and RB Jamal Charles will surely benefit with Alex Smith at the helm in Andy Reid’s offense.  Don’t be surprised to see Alex ‘game manager’ Smith, lead the Chiefs deep into the playoffs and possibly face his former team in the big dance.
