Bruce Smith Charged With DUI

NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Smith was charged with drunken driving early this morning, police said. He was driving eastbound on Interstate 264 near the Independence Boulevard exits when an officer stopped him for speeding at 1:42 a.m., said Officer Jimmy Barnes, a police spokesman. He refused to take a breath test and was arrested, he said. Smith, 45, was released on bond a few hours later. This is the third time Smith, a Norfolk native and former defensive lineman for the Washington Redskins, has been arrested on a charge of driving under the influence. The first time was in 1997, but those charges were dismissed. The second arrest was in 2003, and Smith was acquitted. Smith was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in February.
