Running to Victory

By PFC Writer JP King

Hello everyone, I’m back after my brief hiatus, but enough about me let’s get right into the action.  For this piece, let’s focus on the world of running backs, with both Derrick Ward and Darren Sproles. Now, this is not only about comparison and contrast, but it’s also about who can bring the heat, and be the best in this league and why.
First up is Derrick Ward of the Giants, who is nothing short of a great talent within the NFL as it pertains to being a running back. To jog everyone’s memory about Ward, it was in 2007 that he had an amazing season. Ward managed to average 4.8 yards per carry and get three touch-downs. However, it was just one year later in 2008 when Ward finished the season having earned a grand total of 1,025 yards.  Thus, it is clear to see that Ward brings home the numbers and would be a great starter for the league.

Still, there is a great deal to be said for Darren Sproles, who is currently known as the shortest player in the NFL. With Sproles we can also go back to 2007 when he made his first two history making touch-downs after returning one from a kick-off and the other from a punt.  Then it was just a year later in 2008, when Sproles really showed the world just what he was made of by earning 50 rushing yards, 50 receiving yards, and 100 return yards in one game. To take it a step further it was then in 2009 during the wild card game against the Indianapolis Colts where Sproles not only scored the game winning touch-down in over-time but he also finished that game with 328 all purpose yards.

By now, I hope it’s clear to see who I feel would be, and will be the most affective starter in this league. In case you haven’t figured it out though, I’m going all the way with Darren Sproles. Sproles, not only has an impressive amount of total yardage, but aside from that he makes things happen when they need to happen, and well really that’s all that matters. Furthermore, Sproles has shown that as a running back he can lead the team to victory, and make touch-downs and gain yards at the most crucial of times during games.

Still, I hope there is at least one of you who disagrees with me, and feels strongly about Derrick Ward. With that said, I hope you can find it in your heart to bring the heat, and let me know just why you are opposing my intelligence, and opinion.  Also, all I ask is that you feel free as usual to leave me any comments or questions. Also, all I ask is that you bring it, and make yourself heard here at PFC.
