By PFC Rams Writer Don Ackerman
Is it bye-bye week then bye week? Or will it be bye-bye-bye week next weekend? With the bye week two weeks away, I gotta ask, “Is it time for the Rams ownership to give up on management and coaching like the players did on Sunday? At 0-3 in three blowout losses (3-38, 13-41, and 13-37), I’m scratching my head and wondering, “What is going on?”
While I write this on Monday at noon central time, the schedule on the official website (http://www.stlouisrams.com/schedule/) does not yet reflect the score. Why should it? What’s the rush? Maybe even don’t bother. I think the web staff might be feeling down and unmotivated, too.
Look Back:
On Sunday the Rams look lifeless and hapless. But boy did the Rams make the Seahawks look dominant with backup wide receivers running down the field. With the top four receivers out injured, Seattle signed free agent Koren Robinson who couldn’t even play. Despite the lack of starting receivers, Sunday was Seahawk pride day as Seattle blew out Saint Louis and racked up 37 points.
Sure, blame the D if you want for surrendering at least 37 points a game this year. But the O isn’t helping either. With turnovers and averaging less than 1 touchdown a game, the Rams look like a team that is getting the most out of their punter and field goal kicker. I’m happy about a good kicking game but it’s frustrating because it is all the Rams have!
Looking Forward:
The Rams will have a bye week after the Buffalo Bills game in Saint Louis. I almost wrote “The Rams will enjoy a bye week…” but I wonder if enjoy is the right word. For the staff and players, there has been little to enjoy. Maybe the players will enjoy a bye week because they won’t lose that Sunday and taste the bitterness that feels and tastes like throwing up with an empty stomach. Yes, it’s that bad. But I don’t like a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe, just maybe, the Rams will defeat the 3-0 Buffalo Bills at home and go into the bye week with with a win. Maybe then, the Rams can enjoy the bye week.
What If They Win?
Let’s say the Rams win. Is it enough after 3 very bad losses? Does a win mean the Rams don’t need a change? Or am I asking for change just for change’s sake?
The Worst of It
The worst of it is this is not a hopeless team. There are Rams who enjoyed the days when the Rams were feared and dominated the NFL. Some younger Rams joined that club or dreamed of adding to the recent Rams legacy. Instead, it’s bad, it’s brutal, and it’s painful. I’ve been a Rams fan for a long time. I remember the 90s when the Rams were bad and went from Rams to Lambs (the LA for Los Angeles obviously helped). I don’t remember thinking it was this bad. I actually used to joke about it because it’s easier to laugh than cry. But I don’t remember being without hope. Today, I’m not there either but I’m close. Am I the only one?
Ram on,
Don
