Source: 49ers Expected To Name O’Sullivan Opening Day Starter

The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly close to naming JT O’Sullivan there opening day starter against the Arizona Cardinals, sources have informed Pro Football Central. The Niners are have involved in a 3 way quarterback carousel with JT O’Sullivan, Alex Smith and Shaun Hill. Through two games, Sullivan has been 13 for 25 for 225 yards with two interceptions, one touchdown, one fumble lost and no sacks. O’Sullivan’s 10 drives have yielded five punts, three quarterback turnovers and two touchdowns. The QB competition could have really came down to saving the team money as well as performance due to a report that the Niners could save up to $20 million in incentives if they do not start Smith.  O’Sullivan signed with the 49ers during the off-season for the NFL minimum salary of $645,000, and a $40,000 signing bonus; Smith got a $24 million signing bonus after getting drafted in 2005. The same source also states that former starter Alex Smith may ask for a trade once the announcement is made.
