Although he had been released by the Chargers soon after having pled guilty to a felony charge of trafficking codeine-based cough syrup in February of 2007, Terrence Kiel was considered by many Chargers fans to be still “part of the family”. The 27 year old former San Diego Charger and Texas A&M Aggie was involved in a fatal car accident late on the night of July 4, 2008 in the Scripps Ranch area of San Diego. According to an eyewitness, Kiel was alone in his 2004 Chevy sedan, and had been driving the wrong direction, when he lost control. His car began to roll, and Kiel was ejected. He was barely breathing when found by emergency personnel, and was pronounced dead a short time later. No other injuries were reported.
Before this tragedy occurred, though they knew he would likely not return as a Charger, many Chargers fans were hopeful that his quest for reinstatement as an NFL safety would be a successful one. The consensus opinion on Terrence seems to be that he was humble and kind off the field, as well as a diligent and talented football player on the field. One can only hope as the 2008 rookies prepare to begin their professional careers that they learn from this what colossal consequences a few less than savory decisions can bring.
This is a tremendous loss felt certainly by Kiel ’s family and friends, as well as members of the Chargers organization, and fans. His humble spirit and heart-warming smile will truly be missed.
