The San Diego Chargers, having just completed their post-draft mini-camp, appear to be continuing the trend of improvement. Not an easy task, considering that they are widely thought to possess one of, if not the most talented roster in the league.
Thanks in part to having doughtily played through a torn ACL (knee) in the AFC Championship Game, Quarterback Phillip Rivers has been the recipient of a higher level of respect and adoration from his teammates. Already participating in mini-camp, being just under four months removed from surgery to repair the ACL, his demeanor and swagger suggest even more confidence than he already projected. Despite his knee being only partially healed, Philip looked impressive with deep, crisp throws, hitting his receivers in stride. Jeromey Clary, who inherited the starting RT spot after Shane Olivea was injured and eventually released, looked good. Clary appears poised at this point, to continue serving the Chargers as a starter. Eric Weddle appears ready as he prepares for his first season as a full-time starter at the FS position. “He’s shown he’s a playmaker,” said Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner. “He’s a smart guy. (Being a starter) is just another step in his development. He’s obviously an outstanding player.” When the Chargers employ some of their sub packages, Weddle will most likely have the opportunity to display his versatility, much like he did in his rookie season.
In the first round of the recent draft, General Manager A.J. Smith & Co. including recently retired Buddy Nix, fetched former Arizona University Wildcat (CB) Antoine Cason, who appears to be an interesting and promising prospect. Another is (RB) Jacob Hester, who came to the Chargers from LSU, where he was a standout player, and fan favorite. Hester was busy in this weekend’s camp, as he was lined up in several spots, which provided him with opportunities to showcase his multi-faceted abilities set. Some speculate that Hester, would serve well in Norv Turner’s offense in a role such as H-back. If his time playing in the SEC is any indication, Hester could prove to be a Jack-of-all-trades type of player, reminiscent of players like Mike Alstott.
It’s still early, so time will tell, but it appears that the Chargers have more than camp fodder, from the returning non-starters, down into the Un-drafted Free Agents. Of course, it will be difficult to obtain a roster spot as per usual of recent years, with the Chargers having so many players signed to long-term contracts. Stay Tuned…
