Berrian’s Monster Deal Will Create A Ripple Effect

March 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

The six year $42 million contract that includes $16 million in guaranteed money that Vikings wide receiver Bernard Berrian signed this past week will cause a lot of problems for general managers heading into next years off season. Looking at the 2009 offseason we have Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens, Saints receiver Marques Colston, Bengals receiver TJ Houshmanzadeh and Bills receiver Lee Evans heading into free agency if a deal isn’t reached with there respected teams.

Berrian had a career-high 71 catches for 951 yards and five touchdowns in his fourth season in the NFL, and has never solidified himself as a number 1 receiver.

Evans, had 1292 yards in the 2006 season, Owens has racked up eight 1000 yard seasons and Colston, the 2006 standout who will be a restricted free agent has only played two seasons and both season has had 1000 yard seasons.

The Saints although Colston is a restricted free agent need to do the right thing and sign him to a long term deal. He’s set to make $445,000 in base salary for the upcoming season.

Houshmanzadeh, in March of 2005 signed a four-year, $13 million contract. The deal included a $5 million signing bonus. 2008: $2.525 million, 2009: Free Agent . Houshmanzadeh has pretty much broke every record the Bengals may have and has flat out, outplayed Chad Johnson. Before the Berrian deal, Houshmanzadeh was reportedly looking for $25 million, now we expect that number to climb.
Lee Evans has showed incredible progress with the Bills signed a signed a five-year, $12.6 million contract in 2004 . The deal included a $2.25 million signing bonus and contains $7.17 million in total guarantees. 2008: $2.25 million, 2009: $1,236,250 (Voidable Year), 2010: Free Agent.

In March of 2006, the loudmouth Owens signed a a three-year, $25 million contract. The deal included an initial roster bonus of $5 million and a second-year $5 million option bonus. 2008: $4 million (+ $3 million roster bonus due in June), 2009: Free Agent.

One thing is for sure is that a lot of agents are working the phones for these three players demanding that they break the bank and pay more than what Berrian is making. I’m a big fan of stats and looking at these numbers, it’s a fact that these three players should be making more than Berrian and expect them to be.
