The very first PFC dud of this past season, took a strenuous amount of hours of research and looking over the past seasons game films .This player this past season signed the richest contract in the franchise’s history which would be a six year $45 million dollar deal that will pay him $19 million in guaranteed money . Have you figured it out yet? If you guessed Larry Johnson, then you are correct. Lets remember I am a huge fan of a player earning his contract and not threatening to sit out training camp which Johnson did on June 21, 2007, that in my opinion is not a team player and is a player who looked out for himself and acting like a rap star appearing in music videos with Jay Z and Fantasia.
Lets move aside the rich contract which if the NFL didn’t have the current CBA agreement, this deal may never have happened. I am looking at the start of the 2007 season for Johnson who everyone looked to top the 1789 rushing yards he did the previous season. There were a few things that I did notice about LJ that was different from the 2006 season.
One of the biggest drawbacks that I saw was the breakout speed that Johnson used a lot in the previous two seasons. I noticed Johnson hesitating at the point of scrimmage on a lot of players and at times not breaking as many tackles as he did in the 2006 season. A big reason I chose Larry Johnson as the very first PFC Dud of the season (which as of press time, LJ has not accepted his award) would be because of his explanation for having a bad season.
In an interview Johnson did at the Superbowl, Johnson cited his holdout of training camp as a reason for his soft numbers, blaming the club for not signing him to a new deal sooner. As for his foot, Johnson said it was a freak injury. “I can’t even tell you the medical term,” Johnson tells the Kansas City Star. “The bone in my fourth toe by the joint had a slight crack in it, and it shifted a little bit. . No one knew what I had. You can’t diagnose something and not know what it is. My foot was so swollen; no one knew what was going on. They thought it was a Lisfranc, they thought it was my heel; they thought it was my ankle. Until you get the CT scans and really rotate my foot with high technology, it’s very, very small, but you’re not going to be able to see it. It looked worse than it was, but at the end of the day, we didn’t know what was wrong.”
A few things stand out here with these comments. The first thing is that he actually had the courage to blame the very team who made him the highest paid running back in the NFL at the time for his “mysterious” foot injury. If anyone from the Kansas City Chiefs is reading this, if you guarantee me $19 million dollars, I will promise you that I will not blame your organization for nothing. Another thing that jumped out on me when he pretty much labeled the Chiefs medical staff as people who don’t know what there doing because they couldn’t diagnose him. Again does this sound like a player who just became the highest paid running back in the NFL? No it sounds like the PFC Dud of the season to me.
